ABYC Video Explains How Boating Industry Can Help Limit Aquatic Invasive Species Spread

3/19/2021

The American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) has released an animated video that raises awareness of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS), the threat they pose to the boating industry, and how the industry can help combat them.

AIS have the potential to damage ecosystems, negatively impacting fishing and the boating lifestyle. Due to AIS concerns, boat access to many aquatic resources has been limited, and AIS infestation can result in damage to boats and their components. For example, invasive plants can foul propellers, jam impellors, and cause bilge pump failure; mussels can attach to engines and cause component failure, or obstruct water lines. However, the boating industry and manufacturers can help to limit the spread of AIS through innovative boat designs that are easier to inspect and decontaminate, as explained in ABYC’s new video.
