U.S. TAG for ISO/TC 42, photography

Objectives & Scope

The primary goal of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 42, Photography, is to enhance the global competitiveness of U.S. business by promoting and facilitating voluntary consensus standards and ensuring their integrity. The U.S. TAG represents national interests on digital photography and image permanence standards at ISO. ANSI administers the U.S. TAG to ISO/TC 42, sponsored by the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T), to coordinate national standards activities for existing and emerging photographic technology. The U.S. TAG is guided by the ANSI cardinal principles of consensus, due process, and openness.

The scope of ISO/TC 42, and consequently the U.S. TAG, is: Standardization primarily, but not exclusively, in the field of still picture imaging  chemical and electronic  including, but not limited to:

  • definitions for still imaging systems;
  • methods for measuring, testing, rating, packaging, labelling, specifying and classifying the dimensions, physical properties and performance characteristics of media, materials and devices used in chemical and electronic still imaging;
  • specifications and recommendations of logical and physical characteristics, practices, interfaces formats and metadata for still imaging capture, processing, and output systems; and
  • methods, measurements, specifications, and recommended practices for storage, permanence, integrity and security of imaging media and materials, and imaging materials disposition.

Structure

The U.S. TAG "mirrors" the structure of ISO/TC 42 in that the U.S. TAG develops consensus positions on all technical matters of each of the Working Groups (WGs) and Joint Working Groups (JWGs). The U.S. TAG work is divided into two Imaging Technology (IT) Committees, on Image Permanence and Digital Photography, and a Technical Maintenance Committee (TMC) as described on the IS&T website.
