Historically, standards development consortia, alliances and forums (“Consortia”) have been lightly resourced organizations that may not closely follow policy matters. In recent years, however, the standards development landscape has become increasingly politicized, and export controls imposed by the United States and other jurisdictions have complicated the operations of standards developers. This trend is expected to continue for the indefinite future. In order for Consortia to more effectively react to these challenges, a mechanism is needed to allow Consortia and traditional standards development organizations (“SDOs”) to exchange information and collaborate with each other to secure a safe space for standardization activities and enable innovation globally. One mechanism to do so would be to create a venue where Consortia can meet to receive relevant information, trade insights and views, share best practices, interact with traditional SDOs, and where appropriate, identify opportunities for action.
The purpose of the Technology Consortium Council (TCC) is to:
Formally kicked off in June 2025, the TCC membership includes non-profit, collaborative membership organizations that develop and/or promote standards or best practices in standards development. Participation in the TCC is initially by invitation. Going forward, the TCC will determine its membership and membership structure.
