Non-sewered Sanitation Programs

International Standards for Non-sewered Sanitation

One Standard Impacting 3.4 Billion People

Over 3.4 billion people lack access to basic sanitation — and an international standard for non-sewered sanitation systems is helping change that. To mark its official partnership with World Engineering Day 2026, ANSI released a video on how international standards are tackling the global sanitation crisis. The video features ANSI president and CEO Dr. Laurie E. Locascio, senior director of international development Leslie McDermott, and Elhadji Abdourahmane Ndione of the Association Sénégalaise de Normalisation, who speak to the standard's collaborative development and on-the-ground impact.

ANSI Sanitation

ANSI Sanitation engages with national standards bodies (NSBs) and key government, NGO, and private-sector water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) partners in Africa, South Asia, and China to promote the adoption and use of international non-sewered sanitation standards (primarily ISO 30500 and ISO 24521).

ANSI Sanitation works with intergovernmental unions (Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Southern African Development Community (SADC)), regional standard organizations (African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) and Southern Asian Regional Standards Organization (SARSO)) and NSBs to review ISO standards and conduct trainings and awareness-building workshops.
