U.S. TAG for ISO/TC 82/SC 7, Sustainable mining and mine closure

Objectives & Scope

The primary goal of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 82/SC 7, Sustainable mining and mine closure, is to enhance the global competitiveness of U.S. business by promoting and facilitating voluntary consensus standards and ensuring their integrity. The U.S. TAG represents national interests on ISO/TC 82/SC 7. ANSI administers the U.S. TAG to ISO/TC 82/SC 7, sponsored by the U.S. State Department, to coordinate national standards activities for existing and emerging products. The U.S. TAG is guided by the ANSI cardinal principles of consensus, due process, and openness.

The scope of ISO/TC 82/SC 7, and consequently the U.S. TAG, is:

Standardization of environmental, social and governance aspects of mining to:

  • minimize the negative impacts from mining through its life cycle and transition to post-mining land use,
  • take action to combat climate change and its impacts,
  • develop sustainable benefits and opportunities for local and regional communities,
  • respect community cultural connections to places,
  • adopt a long-term view that ensures inter-generational equity,
  • embrace opportunities for innovation by adopting the principles of the circular economy,
  • enhance transparency of mining practices.

Excluded:

  • Occupational health and safety aspects related to workplace activities, covered by ISO/TC 283.
  • Risk management guidance, provided in ISO 31000.
  • Industrial wastewater treatment and reuse, covered by ISO/TC 282/SC4.
  • Machinery.

Structure

The U.S. TAG mirrors the structure of ISO/TC 82/SC 7 in that the U.S. TAG develops consensus positions on all technical matters of each of the Working Groups (WGs) and Ad Hoc Groups (AHGs).
