People on the Move

10/16/2020

People on the Move highlights the career advancements of high-level trailblazers working professionally in diverse areas of standardization, contributing every day to the strength and success of the U.S. standards and conformance community.

The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), a member and accredited standards developer of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has announced that Melissa Newman is the organization’s new vice president of government affairs. Ms. Newman will lead TIA’s public policy strategy to support legislative and regulatory initiatives.

Prior to joining TIA, Ms. Newman was the vice president of external affairs and senior legal counsel at Transit Wireless. She has extensive experience in the telecommunications industry, previously serving as counsel at Wilkinson Barker Knauer; vice president, federal policy and regulatory at CenturyLink/Qwest/US West; and deputy division chief of the policy division in the Common Carrier Bureau of the FCC. Ms. Newman was also legal counsel to the Common Carrier Bureau Chief, and practiced communications law as an associate at Willkie Farr & Gallagher.

“Melissa’s legal and policy experience combined with her deep understanding of the telecommunications industry will make her an extremely valuable asset to TIA, and at a critical time, as our industry is rapidly evolving,” said CEO David Stehlin. “We’re thrilled to welcome her to TIA as we continue to expand our advocacy efforts on behalf of our members.”

SAE International, an ANSI member and audited designator, has appointed Amy Chu as the new director of the SAE Industry Technologies Consortia (SAE ITC)’s Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium (AVSC).

Ms. Chu comes to the AVSC with nearly 20 years of automotive experience, most recently as senior director of Harman’s Automotive Cybersecurity Center of Excellence. There, she aligned product development policies and processes with cybersecurity best practices and global standards. She previously led project management for Harman’s CTO, working with the automotive division’s technology innovation pipeline. Ms. Chu has also held a top leadership role in the Automotive Information Sharing Analysis Center (Auto-ISAC), as well as leadership and engineering roles with Magna Electronics and Tellabs, Inc.

“Amy adds another expert voice and point of view to our consortium. Bringing on someone of Amy’s caliber will allow AVSC to mature as an organization and continue to address the most pressing issues around ADS development, test, and deployment.” said Dr. Edward Straub, executive director of the AVSC.
