OPEI’s Foundation Predicts Continued “Backyarding” Trend beyond Pandemic

3/03/2021

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) has published an article predicting that “backyarding,” or the trend of moving indoor activities to the outdoors, will continue beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

Along with its TurfMutt Foundation, OPEI offers tips on everything from working to learning to dining outdoors with greater comfort and flexibility. These tips include:

  • Plant something as early as you can. Adding trees, bushes, and flowering plants will improve your outdoor space, but they take time to grow. Plant as early as recommended.
  • Have a “staycation” in your own yard – pitch a tent, build a campfire, hang a sheet between two trees and project a movie onto it, or set up games for a faux vacation spot.
  • Add plants that support birds, bees, butterflies, and other wildlife, such as flowering plants, trees, and shrubs that provide food and shelter for these critters. You’ll be supporting your local ecosystem and bringing wildlife and nature to you.
