ANSI Seeks Comments on Proposed New ISO Technical Committee for Pet Products

3/27/2025

Submit Feedback by April 11

As the U.S. member body to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) seeks comments by April 11 on a proposal for a new ISO Technical Committee on pet products.

Submitted by the Standardization Administration of China (SAC), China's member body to ISO, the proposal asserts that although the global pet care market size is expected to grow from 295 billion USD in 2022 to 400.4 billion USD in 2028, many countries and regions do not have specific standards for pet products. To that end, these pet products may undergo product recalls due to safety issues, as explained in more detail in the document.

The proposed ISO Technical Committee scope is:

  • Standardization of safety requirements and test methods for pet products.

Excluded are pet food, drugs and health related products; all electrical aspects that are dealt with by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC); and pet toys covered by ISO/TC 181, Safety of Toys.

According to the proposal, the development of a series of international standards for pet products can help improve safety, quality, and usability of pet products effectively and efficiently.

Read the proposal and submit comments to Steven Cornish, ANSI senior director of international policy and strategy, at [email protected] by close of business on Friday, April 11. All input ANSI receives will be used to develop the ANSI representative input to the ISO Technical Management Board.
