CHALLENGE:
As hydrogen adoption grows across industrial, transportation, and energy sectors, assuring safe and reliable operation of hydrogen storage systems is critical. The storage, handling, and distribution of hydrogen present unique challenges, including high-pressure containment, cryogenic storage, flammability, and potential safety hazards. Without standardized guidance, businesses can face increased operational inefficiencies and regulatory compliance gaps—as well as risks related to safety incidents—potentially hindering public acceptance and the expansion of hydrogen as a clean energy solution.
SOLUTION:
A standard was developed by the Compressed Gas Association to guide safe hydrogen storage and distribution—making it easier for companies to comply with industry best practices, boost operational effectiveness, and reduce hazards. CGA H-5, Standard for Bulk Hydrogen Supply Systems, an American National Standard, establishes minimum requirements for the siting, selection, installation, maintenance, and removal of bulk hydrogen supply systems. These systems are used to support a variety of applications including vehicle fueling stations, petroleum refining, stationary power and backup power systems, fertilizer production, space exploration, food processing, and more.
IMPACT:
For industry: CGA H-5 supports operational reliability and regulatory compliance, reducing downtime and mitigating risks associated with hydrogen storage and transport. Standardized safety measures also enhance investor confidence and accelerate the adoption of hydrogen technologies.
