Movers and Shakers

2/14/2025

Movers and Shakers highlights the career advancements and accomplishments of high-level trailblazers working professionally in diverse areas of standardization, contributing every day to the strength and success of the U.S. standards and conformance community.

Ruth Cheng, Ph.D. was recently appointed as the new president and chief executive officer of the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC). She succeeds Raymond H. Cypess, Ph.D., who remains on the organization’s board of directors as chairperson.

Most recently, Cheng served as ATCC’s senior vice president and general manager of research and industrial solutions. During her five-year tenure, she positioned ATCC in areas important to the organization’s future, including bioinformatics and biological reference data. Additionally, she expanded the number and diversity of its scientific strategic partnerships.

Previously, Cheng served as vice president of Global Strategy at AgNovos Healthcare, where she led multiple departments and strategic initiatives to expand the company’s portfolio and market access. She was also the director of Innovation and Strategy for the Advanced Surgical Devices Division of Smith + Nephew. There, she oversaw strategic planning and managed portfolio expansion through product development and corporate venturing.

Cheng also worked at Boston Scientific as manager of corporate research and research fellow and strategic partnerships. She has extensive business leadership experience across global markets, including Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

“Dr. Cheng’s vision of where we could go, how we could get there, and what steps to take aligned with that of Dr. Cypess. It became obvious to us that she was the best choice, especially with her track record of accomplishments,” said ATCC board member Steven G. Kaminsky. “Dr. Cheng understands the importance of the company’s hybrid approach to being a financially self-sustaining non-profit organization. This business model reinforces our ability to remain committed to improving global public health, advancing science, and ensuring the safety and security of the United States.”

“It has been my privilege to work alongside such a talented team at ATCC whose unique skills and expertise have made us the most trusted, credible biorepository in the world,” said Cheng. “The people here do incredible work, which enables others to make incredible discoveries.”

Cheng received her master of science and doctorate degrees in biomedical engineering from the University of Michigan. She earned a bachelor of arts in biological sciences from Cornell University.

Steve Margis, conformity assessment director at UL Solutions, was recently distinguished as the 44th Corporate Fellow of the William Henry Merrill Society (WHMS).

The William Henry Merrill Society (WHMS) was established in 2006 as a tribute to the founder of UL Research Institutes, UL Standards & Engagement, and UL Solutions to recognize the critical importance of the organizations’ technical experts. The WHMS formally recognizes those in these organizations who have made significant and sustained contributions to advancing safety science.

Corporate Fellow membership is the highest level of membership of the Society. Individuals selected have achieved distinction in their profession both internally and externally and have made significant contributions to the health, safety, sustainability, and security of the world.

Margis, a 2023 recipient of ANSI’s Elihu Thomson Electrotechnology Medal, is recognized as a global expert in conformity assessment and serves as the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) vice president and chair of the IEC Conformity Assessment Board.
