ANSI Releases Guide for U.S. Delegates in International Standardization

5/11/2020

Provides overview on ISO/IEC standards process, meeting best practices

As part of its ongoing effort to support U.S. delegates in international standardization, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has released an updated Guide for U.S. Delegates to ISO and IEC meetings. ANSI is the U.S. member body to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and, via its U.S. National Committee, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

The guide contains a summary of guidelines and policy statements issued over the past several years by ANSI and the U.S. National Committee (USNC). It is intended to provide U.S. delegates with important information about how to effectively participate in international standardization activities. The goal is to help public- and private-sector interests realize the vision of globally relevant, technically valid standards for their sectors.

The 32-page guide, accessible online, is intended to answer top U.S. delegate questions, and includes sections that cover:

  • How to prepare, participate, and follow up in meetings

  • An overview of who's involved in ISO and IEC activities

  • How ISO/IEC standards are developed

  • Etiquette, dress, and comportment, and official languages

  • ANSI, IEC, ISO, and USNC organizational charts

"We are proud to support the development of international standardization efforts with this comprehensive guide," said ANSI president and CEO S. Joe Bhatia. "When we look at the big picture, delegates have a crucial job of helping to produce quality standards that can achieve worldwide acceptanceand to keep U.S. industries competitive in the global markets."
