Workcred Expert Series Focuses on Leveraging Credentials to Meet Global Demand for Cleaner Energy

5/12/2025

The oil and gas industry powers everything from the transportation networks that bring food to our tables to the components essential to manufacturing the devices we depend on daily. But how do we fill the talent pipeline to support this vital industry? A recent Workcred Expert Series video episode explores how credentials and standards enhance the oil and natural gas industry, and opportunities for new graduates.

The episode highlights the insights of Andri Orphanides, director of individual certification programs and credentialing specialist, Global Industry Services, API, which offers certification programs based on industry-developed standards. She reflects on trending technology positions that are opening across the industry.

“From everything that I’ve read, Gen Zs are poised to be the most educated of our generation. They come from [educated] households, so that is one of the pathways that they're looking to go to,” said Orphanides. “One of the things that I've seen as a trend in the credentialing industry now is how you can stack degrees and credentials so that when the person [graduates] they have this four-year degree, and they also have a certification that could get them gainful employment a little bit quicker than just getting a degree.”

She noted that her organization, which has helped enhance operational and environmental safety, efficiency, and sustainability over the past 100 years, is now exploring ways to work with universities to achieve stackable credentials to boost industry skills. Roy Swift, executive director of Workcred, who co-presented the episode, added that through grant work, Workcred has focused efforts on embedding certifications into degree pathways, with recent efforts posted on its website.
