The American Water Works Association (AWWA) has recognized Darren A. Lytle with its 2024 A.P. Black Research Award for his significant work in protecting human health by supporting drinking water quality.
Established in 1967 in honor of Dr. A.P. Black, the award recognizes outstanding research contributions to water science and water supply practices.
Lytle has worked for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) since 1990, and has since served as an environmental engineer, providing leadership in identifying, defining, and executing research programs at the agency. He has also served as EPA’s supervisory environmental engineer (branch chief), leading teams of engineers, scientists, and technicians in conducting drinking water research in support of communities and states, and for developing new and previously promulgated federal drinking water standards.
He also has an extensive track record working with outside organizations, groups, academics, and communities. He has published over 100 manuscripts and book chapters, with work printed in Journal AWWA and AWWA Water Science.
“Dr. Lytle’s contributions to the water sector are both groundbreaking and impactful,” said David LaFrance, AWWA CEO. “His dedication to both research and community engagement truly embodies the spirit of the A.P. Black Award.”
The Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG) has announced the appointment of Dr. Julia Matevosyan as its associate director.
Matevosyan, who is also ESIG’s chief engineer, has extensive experience in electrical power system analysis. She will work alongside ESIG executive director Debbie Lew to drive ESIG’s strategy and launch a new effort addressing the integration of large loads such as data centers, hydrogen production, and industrial electrification.
She has 25 years of experience, including at the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) as a lead planning engineer, and holding other positions at several global consulting firms. She specializes in integration of wind, solar, and battery storage into power systems and transmission system planning, and has spent her career working with world-leading institutions and organizations.
She assumes her new role after three years as the organization’s chief engineer, during which time she grew ESIG’s work on grid-forming inverter-based resources, stability phenomena, and system services.
