Energy Sources and Sustainable Production: Attend Virtual ISO Foresight Ideation Workshops in December

11/28/2022

As the U.S. member body to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) encourages U.S. stakeholders to participate in ISO ideation virtual workshops focused on energy sources and sustainable production. These topics were highlighted in the recent ISO Foresight Trend Report and identified by ISO members as the most relevant and highest priority trends to explore further. The workshops (on a repeated schedule to cover different time zones) are designed to discuss the future trajectories of energy sources and sustainable production and collect ideas from stakeholders for future standardization opportunities.

ISO Foresight Ideation Workshop on Energy Sources

“Energy sources” refers to the transformation of the energy sector to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. It is the drive to ensure that energy production becomes affordable, reliable, and sustainable—e.g., by phasing out fossil fuels, scaling up low- and zero-carbon energy sources and additional solutions such as carbon capture, and improving every aspect of energy management, from producer to consumer, according to ISO.

ISO’s Energy Sources Workshop on December 1 from 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. ET will focus on the key challenges and opportunities (societal, technological, economic, environmental, or political) that could emerge as a result of developments related to energy sources. Participants will discuss emerging needs for standardization, and how standardization can help to address the challenges identified. The workshop will also cover how global energy sources have the potential to develop between now and 2050.

Additionally, the workshop will cover key topics related to energy sources, including investment in renewable energy sources and “clean” energy technologies, the prioritization of energy efficient practices, the utilization of carbon capture and storage, the future of nuclear power, and the decline of oil, gas, and coal.

ISO Foresight Ideation Workshop on Sustainable Production

“Sustainable production” refers to production processes shifting towards sustainability in terms of environmental as well as social impacts—e.g., by using minimal natural resources, being non-polluting, and ensuring fair and safe working conditions, as noted by ISO.

ISO’s Sustainable Production Workshop on December 8 from 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. ET will focus on the challenges and opportunities (societal, technological, economic, environmental, or political) that could emerge as a result of the rapid development of sustainable production, and how standardization can help to address these challenges and leverage opportunities. The discussion will also cover how sustainable production could develop between now and 2050.

The workshop will also reference other key trends in sustainable production, including going green as an important business strategy, the circular economy, new business models, new generation plastics and materials, and smart manufacturing.
