Get Involved! Participants Sought for U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ISO TC 135 on Non-Destructive Testing

As the U.S. member body to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) encourages relevant stakeholders to get involved in the U.S. TAG for ISO Technical Committee (TC) 135, Non-destructive testing (NDT).

ANSI accredits U.S. TAGs to develop and transmit U.S. positions on ISO technical activities. ANSI member and accredited standards developer the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) serves as the ANSI-accredited administrator of the U.S. TAG to ISO TC 135.

The scope of ISO TC 135’s activity is: Standardization covering non-destructive testing as applied generally to constructional materials, components and assemblies, by means of:

  • Glossary of terms
  • Methods of test
  • Performance specifications for testing equipment and ancillary apparatus

Quality levels and specifications for electrical equipment and apparatus, which fall within the range of IEC Committees, are excluded from the scope.

The U.S. TAG to ISO TC 135 is seeking volunteer members to support the following subcommittees (SCs):

  • SC 4 - Eddy current testing
  • SC 8 - Thermographic testing
  • SC 9 - Acoustic emission testing

Relevant Applicant Requirements

Members of the U.S. TAG to ISO TC 135 should meet the definition of a U.S. National Interested Party and have a direct and material interest in the NDT profession that represents an NDT interest category:

  • Producer: Provider of NDT services or of goods which require NDT services
  • User of NDT services or of goods which require NDT services
  • General Interest: all others

Applicants are expected to have experience in NDT and NDT personnel certification programs; represent the U.S. TAG to ISO TC 135; and actively participate in the respective subcommittees. In order to participate in the subcommittees identified above, applicants shall hold a third-party NDT Level III credential in the applicable method(s): Examples of NDT credentials include ASNT,  ASNT Central Certification Program (ACCP), and other ISO 9712, Non-destructive testing — Qualification and certification of NDT personnel based programs. Other credentials such as a Level III employer-based certification may be accepted, subject to approval by the U.S. TAG to ISO TC 135.

Participation and membership is not conditional upon being an ASNT member.

Stakeholders who wish to join the U.S. TAG to ISO TC 135 in the development of ISO standards related to NDT can submit a request for membership to the U.S. TAG Administrator (ASNT).

Applicants are asked to indicate direct and material interest in the U.S. TAG work and their willingness to participate actively in the applicant’s interest category, along with their contact information, place of employment, and list of any certifications in NDT-related fields that are held.  Submit requests to Michelle Thomas at [email protected], by June 1, 2022.
