People on the Move

2/05/2021

People on the Move highlights the career advancements of high-level trailblazers working professionally in diverse areas of standardization, contributing every day to the strength and success of the U.S. standards and conformance community.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), a member and accredited standards developer of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has announced that Martin (Marty) J. Fertal is its new chief operating officer. In this role, Mr. Fertal oversees internal operations including membership, marketing and sales, continuing education, and publications and communications. He also oversees the operational areas of finance, customer service, and human resources.

Mr. Fertal is a civil engineer and management executive with over 30 years of organizational and operational leadership experience. He has expertise in strategic planning, business development, business process improvement, IT program management, and staff development. Prior to joining ASCE, Mr. Fertal was with the Logistics Management Institute (LMI), serving as principal for program and implementation management. There, he oversaw key LMI strategic initiatives, including reshaping corporate program review structures, achieving improved operational performance, and implementing successful management strategies. Previously, he held senior positions with Engility Corporation, TASC, Northrop Grumman, TRW, and BDM International.

"I look forward to adding Marty's leadership to the ASCE staff team in the new year," said ASCE executive director Tom Smith. "I know that his exceptional leadership skills and strategic approach to organizational growth and business development will greatly benefit the Society, our members, volunteers, and our staff."

The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, has appointed Rowdy Gaines as vice president of partnerships and development. He will oversee the Step Into Swim Program, work on partnerships and business developments, and serve as a spokesperson for the organization.

Mr. Gaines is known as the “Voice of Swimming.” A three-time Olympic gold medalist, he has been inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame and International Swimming Hall of Fame, and will be commentating at his eighth Olympics broadcast for NBC at this year’s Tokyo Games. He is an ambassador for swimming, acting as an influential advocate for learn-to-swim programs and swimming safety. Prior to joining PHTA, Mr. Gaines was vice president of aquatics for the Central Florida YMCA, where he developed and oversaw fundraising strategies and activities. Previously, Mr. Gaines was the executive director of the USA Swimming Foundation, where he raised over $50 million and developed the “Make a Splash” initiative, as well as executive director of the LIMU Company.

“We are delighted to have Rowdy be part of PHTA,” said PHTA president and CEO Sabeena Hickman. “He has a broad reach amongst our industry and comes with great ideas and energy. We know he will inspire our current and future partners to continue advancing the aquatics industry.”
