The U.S. Standardization Center of Excellence (SCoE) hosted its first Critical and Emerging Technologies (CET) Stakeholder Workshop on May 14-15 to help shape the future of CET standardization.
The SCoE is a cooperative agreement between the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) and ASTM International aimed at supporting private sector-driven engagement and capacity building in the development and use of international standards. ANSI is an implementing partner of the SCoE, along with ASME, the Association for Advancing Automation (A3) Robotics, CSA Group, IEEE, and UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE).
The workshop engaged over 200 stakeholders from government, standards developing organizations, industry, and academia to share expertise and insights on the development and use of standards for CETs, challenges they are facing, and opportunities for acceleration. Topics of discussion included:
Participants shared common themes, areas of divergence, and opportunities for cross-CET collaboration for improved speed and efficiency. Breakout sessions focused on suggestions for initial actions to accelerate progress in: pre-standardization engagement, workforce capacity building, information and data sharing, and possible cooperative pilot projects in critical CET areas. The workshop concluded with a discussion of how stakeholders can continue to be involved in the SCoE. Visit ASTM International’s SCoE webpage and ANSI.org to stay informed on SCoE activities.
