On behalf of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) National Coordination Office (NCO) seeks public input to support the revision of the 2023 National AI Research and Development Strategic Plan. The OSTP's Request for Information (RFI) identifies AI standards, security, and reliability research, among other efforts, as a potential priority area for federal research and development (R&D) investment to strengthen America's global AI leadership.
Identifying Priority Areas to Leverage AI Efforts
Public feedback will inform the 2025 National AI R&D Strategic Plan, which will highlight federal strategic priorities for AI research and development. Among these areas, the RFI lists several federal AI R&D investments that could be prioritized:

NITRD NCO encourages the contribution of ideas from the public, including AI researchers, industry leaders, and other stakeholders directly engaged in or affected by AI R&D, by May 29. See the Federal Register notice for submission instructions.
Background: National AI Research and Development Strategic Plan
Signed in 2025, Executive Order 14179, Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence, is aimed at establishing U.S. policy for sustaining and enhancing America's AI leadership in order to promote human flourishing, economic competitiveness, and national security. The EO directs the development of an AI Action Plan to advance America's AI leadership. Ultimately, with public input, 2025 National AI R&D Strategic Plan will be aligned with the AI Action Plan.
