Pet Products: ANSI Seeks Comments on Proposal for New ISO Technical Committee

7/11/2025

Submit comments by September 4

As the U.S. member body to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) seeks comments by September 4 on a draft proposal submitted by SAC (the ISO member for China) for a new ISO technical committee on pet products.

According to the proposal, despite rising pet ownership rates worldwide, many countries and regions still lack specific standards for pet products. As a result, pet products are regulated as general consumer items, which can leave some pet products with potential safety hazards. Without specific international standards, pet product safety can only be assessed using the materials or characteristics of similar products, the proposal asserts. To that end, international standards or technical specifications for pet products can improve the safety level of pet products and assure the safety of pets and pet owners, and also have a long-term favorable impact on the overall market and reduce costs arising from different national and regional regulations.

The proposal for the technical activity includes the following scope statement:

Standardization of safety requirements and test methods for pet products which are designed or obviously intended to facilitate seating, bathing, feeding, mouthing, sleeping, playing, transportation, activity, and protection for pets.

Excluded:

  • Pet food covered by ISO TC 34/SC 10, Animal feeding stuffs
  • Pet toys covered by ISO TC 181, Safety of toys
  • Drugs and health related products
  • All electrical aspects that are dealt with by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)

Read more details in the draft proposal.

Comments on this proposal should be submitted to Sara Desautels, ANSI senior director, international policy, at [email protected] by Thursday, September 4, 2025. All input ANSI receives will be used to develop a recommended ANSI position and comments that will be sent to the ANSI ISO Council for approval before submittal to ISO by the October 2, 2025 voting deadline.
