ANSI is seeking new administrator organizations and participants for the U.S. Technical Advisory Groups (TAGs) to several committees of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) related to Traditional Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Ayurveda and Yoga.
ISO recently restructured Technical Committee (TC) 249, broadening its focus from Traditional Chinese Medicine to encompass all Traditional Medicine. The restructuring established two Subcommittees (SCs): SC 1, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and SC 2, Ayurveda and Yoga. Ayurveda and yoga is a new area of standardization for ISO; the SC was developed following a recent proposal from BIS, the ISO member for India.

According to the World Health Organization, traditional medicine encompasses “systems for healthcare and well-being, comprising practices, skills, knowledge, and philosophies originating in different historical and cultural contexts, which are distinct from and pre-date biomedicine, evolving with science for current use from an experience-based origin.” Traditional medicine often emphasizes nature-based remedies and uses holistic approaches to restore balance of mind, body, and environment. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) offers physical and mental health benefits for many patients, and has evolved over thousands of years. TCM takes a holistic approach to health and wellness and focuses as much, if not more, on the prevention of illness as it does on the treatment. As ISO previously reported, with the global growth of TCM, governments, industry experts, and companies around the world are focusing efforts on how to use TCM more scientifically, safely, and effectively.
The scope of TC 249/SC 1, Traditional Chinese medicine, is the following:
“Standardization in the field of medical systems derived from ancient Chinese medicine which shall be able to share one common set of standards. Both traditional and modern aspects of these systems are covered. The committee focuses on quality and safety of raw materials, manufactured products, and medical devices, and of informatics, including service standards limited to involving the safe use and delivery of devices and medicine, but not into the clinical practice or application of those products.”
