The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has submitted a response to a Request for Information (RFI) from the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) on key priorities to be included in the development of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Plan.
The Plan is directed by a presidential Executive Order signed on January 23, 2025,onRemoving Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence. The Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) National Coordination Office (NCO), on behalf of the OSTP, issued this RFI notice seeking input from the public, including respondents from academia; industry groups; private sector organizations; state, local, and tribal governments; and other interested parties, on priority actions that should be included in the Plan.
ANSI’s response, submitted on behalf of the U.S. standardization community, emphasizes the vital role of the private-sector led standardization system in the U.S.—and the public-private partnerships that have long contributed to it—in sustaining and enhancing AI leadership in the U.S.
“Effective, voluntary standards and conformity assessment solutions are vital to advancing rapidly-evolving, cross-cutting, and transformative technology areas such as AI—demanding leadership, investment, and public-private collaboration. To balance opportunities and risks in AI deployment, we recommend that the new AI Action Plan prioritize private-sector-led standardization efforts that involve the participation of all affected stakeholders, including government,” reads the response.
Further recommendations in the response address providing continuous support for technical experts’ participation in standards-setting activities throughout the standards development lifecycle; engagement in the development of AI technical standards and tools that have broad, cross-sectoral applications; and coordinating across the federal enterprise to identify and prioritize the federal government’s AI standards needs.
