The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) encourages relevant stakeholders to attend a web conference on November 10, 2021, to discuss a proposed subcommittee for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) / International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Joint Technical Committee (JTC) 1, Information Technology, to develop standards in the area of brain-computer interface. The U.S. plays a leading role in ISO/IEC JTC 1, with ANSI serving as Secretariat, and Philip Wennblom of Intel serving as JTC 1 chair.
Brain-computer interface is a computer-based system that acquires brain signals, analyzes them, and translates them into commands that are relayed to an output device to carry out a desired action. As the potential for this technology expands, JTC 1’s Advisory Group (AG) 16 on Brain-Computer Interface has dedicated time since its launch three years ago to understanding potential standardization needs. The group has focused on providing a description of key concepts related to brain-computer interface, and describing relevant terminology. In addition, it assesses the current state of standardization activities relevant to brain-computer interface, and studies current related technologies that are being deployed.
AG 16 recently produced a final study report for consideration at the November 2021 JTC 1 plenary meeting; the report recommends that JTC 1 form a new subcommittee to develop standards in the area of brain-computer interface. Furthermore, the national standards body of China has submitted has submitted a proposal to JTC 1 to form such a subcommittee.
The November webinar will feature a presentation by the JTC 1/AG 16 convenor, Yuntao Yu, who will share information about the evaluation and findings of the study on brain-computer interface, including AG 16’s research on use cases, terminology, and standardization needs. An overview of the proposed subcommittee will also be presented.
