ASIS International: The Role of Security Culture and Governance in Data Centers

6/06/2025

Technology alone cannot secure data centers. Organizational leaders can build their "human firewall" through a stronger security culture. ASIS International’s recent feature article highlights the practical ways to bridge governance and culture in high-security environment.

Mimecast’s recent State of Human Risk Report found that 95% of cybersecurity breaches are due to human error, highlighting the critical role of security culture in data centers.

“Even the most sophisticated security technology is only as effective as the people who operate it,” writes Michael Brzozowski, global security leader, author of the article. He emphasizes that organizations that prioritize principles over procedures and embed governance into everyday practices can create a proactive security environment over time.

He offers guidance for organizational leaders to get started:

  • Narrate the “Why:” Explain the business impact of each control. People will relate more when they understand the rationale and the consequences.
  • Make It Personal: Encourage ownership by empowering employees to see themselves as part of the security ecosystem, not just to follow the rules.
  • Reinforce Through Storytelling: Share examples of both incidents and wins. It's critical to normalizing open dialogue and speaking up.
  • Celebrate Catches, Not Just Failures: People respond to incentives, so reward the behaviors you want to see and recognize when someone spots a process gap or prevents a mistake.
