NEMA Feature Explores How Manufacturers Have Pioneered the Future of Electric Lighting

2/28/2024

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published an article authored by Karen Willis, managing director, lighting systems, NEMA, that explores the contributions and innovations of manufacturers and pioneers who have paved the way to smart lighting.

The February feature examines the capabilities of LEDs, which offer great performance, long life (10,000+ hours), and increased systems integration.

She notes the power of LEDs: “The data and impact are clear: Lighting as a portion of overall energy consumption in commercial buildings dropped from 20% in 2010 to 10% in 2018,” Willis writes. “No other appliance or type of equipment has come close to achieving these cumulative cost savings: $14.7 billion, according to DOE’s 2018 estimate. NEMA estimates that market penetration of LED A-line lamps represented close to 80% of installed light bulbs in 2022, and forecasts an increase to greater than 90% for 2023.”

Access the article and read about the dawn of electrification on NEMA’s blog.
