Get Involved: U.S. TAG to ISO Technical Committee 286 on Collaborative Business Relationship Management

6/24/2021

Collaborative business relationship management can enhance competitiveness and performance for organizations of all types across the globe. Members of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 286, Collaborative business relationship management, are active in standardization work in this field of activity. As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) encourages interested U.S. experts to participate in the U.S. TAG.

Surveys show that while organizations view collaboration as essential, more than half of all collaborations fail to reach their objectives. Created in 2013, ISO TC 286 helps to enhance value realization between organizations by harnessing the benefits of collaborative working. The technical committee, which has 12 participating national standards body members, has supported the development of five published ISO standards under the direct responsibility of the TC secretariat, BSI.

Standards include:

  • ISO 37500:2014, Guidance on outsourcing
  • ISO/TR 44000:2019, Principles for successful collaborative business relationship management
  • ISO 44001: 2017, Collaborative business relationship management systems- Requirements and framework
  • ISO 44002: 2019, Collaborative business relationship management systems- Guidelines on the implementation of ISO 44001
  • ISO 44003: 2021, Collaborative business relationship management- Guidelines for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises on the implementation of the fundamental principles

As an example of the outcome of ISO TC 286’s work efforts: Organizations can use ISO 44001, Collaborative business relationship management systems, to leverage business and enable themselves and their partners to work in unison, using a disciplined approach to achieve a defined and common business purpose.

The TC is currently working on standardization to support ISO/DIS 44004, Collaborative business relationship management — Guidelines for large organizations seeking collaboration with MSMEs.

The Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals (ASAP) serves as the ANSI-Accredited U.S. TAG Administrator to TC 286.

“A disciplined, proven framework and common language enable organizations of all sizes, irrespective of geographies to partner more quickly, with more confidence, and with more consistent strategic performance," said ASAP president and CEO Michael Leonetti, CSAP, who serves as chair of the U.S. TAG. “As a lead member of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group that has worked collaboratively with stakeholders within and outside the U.S., I am proud of the accomplishments and continued work on standards for collaborative business relationship management. While the U.S. TAG is currently working on developing the next set of guidance documents, it has been promoting the ISOv44001 standard through a monthly webinar series, started in 2021, Collaborative Connection Monthly – Insights of Collaborative Principles from ISO 44001. It’s free for anyone to attend interested in learning more on key elements from the standard.”

U.S. TAG participation is open to all interested U.S. parties. The U.S. TAG currently has representation from pharma, tech, and academia. The group is looking to expand to include representatives from other organizations and industries that would like to contribute to the standardization work in the field of collaborative business relationship management.
