ASSP Covers Risk Management: Improving Safety and Organizational Culture

8/07/2024

The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) has published an article based on lessons learned from its webinar covering “Risk Management for the OSH Professional: Risk Management Differently.”

For the webinar, ASSP’s Blacks in Safety Excellence (BISE) Common Interest Group and Risk Management Practice Specialty hosted Fran Sehn, principal consultant with FxS Risk and Safety Consulting, who spoke about how risk management involves understanding and anticipating risk, and taking steps to reduce or offset that risk.

According to Sehn’s six-step enhanced model for risk management, it is important to:

  • establish risk management processes with specific goals and objectives;
  • assess, identify, and analyze the risks, including sources to measure and assess risk;
  • develop business risk management strategies;
  • design and implement risk controls;
  • monitor risk management performance, and
  • implement continual improvement.

“We need to have a good foundation from a business standpoint . . . so we can see where we fit and integrate what we do as OSH professionals into that business process,” Sehn said.

Access the webinar and article with details on the six steps via ASSP’s website.
