NIST Engineer's Story Brings to Life the Importance of Standards Development
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently published a blog post by Dr. Bala Muralikrishnan, a mechanical engineer in their Sensor Science Division, detailing his introduction into the standards community and his firsthand experiences that have demonstrated the value of participation in standards development.
Dr. Muralikrishnan has worked in a NIST laboratory for many years, and his research is focused on modelling advanced measurement systems, developing tests methods to characterize error sources, and support standards development activities. He explains how, over the course of his career, he began to develop an appreciation for documentary standards.

FGIA to Host Webinar on New California Data Privacy Law
The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) will host a webinar next month explaining a new data privacy law in California and how it could impact businesses' interactions with customers and prospects.
"Understanding How California's New Law and Other Data Privacy Regulations May Impact Your Business" will be led by FGIA's U.S. codes and regulatory affairs manager Kathy Krafka Harkema on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, at 12:30 p.m. Eastern.
In 2020, the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA), an ANSI member and accredited standards developer, and the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (IGMA) officially combined into FGIA.
"If you're wondering what California's new data privacy laws entail, we'll cover the facts about the new California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including what's required to comply, what rights it provides California consumers, and what the consequences are for failure to comply. ASTM and UL Sign International Collaboration Agreement for Additive Manufacturing Standard
ASTM International and Underwriters Laboratories (UL), both ANSI members and audited designators, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will result in a dual-logo ISO-ASTM standard.
Through the collaboration agreement, the first of its kind between the two organizations, ASTM will serve as the standards developing organization (SDO) and convene its additive manufacturing technical committee to review and advance the document before publishing the standard. It will be based on UL 3400, Outline of Investigation for Additive Manufacturing Facility Safety Management, which was developed using UL research.
"This partnership brings together both organizations' expertise and shared desire to drive global safety," said UL vice president, global standards Phil Piqueira. "It leverages ASTM's technical committee and relationship with ISO with our document and research to drive impact and positively influence the international standards landscape."
"The collaborative nature of global standardization creates many opportunities for partnership with other SDOs," said Brian Meincke, ASTM vice president of finance, business development, and innovation. "We appreciate these opportunities to share knowledge with partners like Underwriters Laboratories to help advance public safety in this fast-evolving field."

IAPMO Seeks Technical Subcommittee Members for Development of National Standard IAPMO Z1351
The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), an ANSI member and audited designator, is seeking volunteers with "technical background in plumbing and mechanical systems and specific knowledge of electronic plumbing supply system integrity detection devices such as jurisdictional authorities, testing lab and educational facility representatives, as well as manufacturing experts" to participate in its IAPMO Z1351 Technical Subcommittee (TSC).
The Z1351 TSC members will be assisting the Plumbing Standards Committee (PSC) with the development of a new American National Standard (ANS) and National Standard of Canada (NSC).

ANSI ExSC Approves Accreditation of U.S. TAG to CASCO
ANSI's Executive Standards Council (ExSC) has formally approved the accreditation of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to CASCO, ISO's Committee on Conformity Assessment, and the appointment of ANSI as TAG Administrator, effective March 23, 2020.
