In collaboration with the U.S. Department of Commerce (DoC) and the American Automotive Policy Council (AAPC), the
Standards Alliance—a public-private partnership between the
American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)—recently organized a one-day workshop entitled "Automotive Standards and Regulations in the Americas" in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Over 70 participants attended the April 22 event to address issues related to public safety and the environment, technological advances for the prevention of accidents, cybersecurity, and electrical and autonomous vehicles in the automotive sector. Representatives of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the governments of Colombia and Mexico, and of industry sectors gave the feature presentations.
The workshop provided an opportunity to:
- Share information on the automotive sector, which is a concern for the Americas region as a whole
- Discuss common issues and priorities related to public safety and the environment
- Exchange information about automotive standards and regulations in the Americas
- Share ideas on how to reduce any negative concerns and ensure countries are able to meet their legitimate regulatory and standards-related goals in the least trade-restrictive way
Future workshops and next steps are being considered in conjunction with the DoC and AAPC. Additionally, the Ministry of Colombia has contacted ANSI asking for continued support and partnership related to use of global (U.S. and EU) standards for its transportation and highway safety agencies.
