The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) congratulates the file format subgroup of MPEG Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG), for achieving a National Academy for Television Arts and Sciences Technology & Engineering Emmy® for 20 years of work on the ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF). The Emmy recognizes the achievements of International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission's (ISO/IEC) Joint Technical Committee (JTC) 1 Information technology, Subcommittee 29, Coding of audio, picture, multimedia and hypermedia information, which organizes the file format subgroup of the MPEG Systems working group ISO/IEC JTC1/SC 29/Working Group 3.
"ANSI congratulates every person involved in the effort, and we are proud to see that the work and commitment of MPEG and the subgroup of ISO/IEC JTC 1 Working Group 3 continues to be recognized in such a great way," said ANSI president and CEO S. Joe Bhatia.
“This recognition further reinforces the major contributions that JTC 1/SC 29 has made to the entertainment industry and society at large,” said Philip C. Wennblom of Intel, ISO/IEC JTC 1 chair.
“The ISO Base Media File Format has become the bedrock underlying modern media storage and delivery, spanning both local storage and streaming services for music, video, and other media,” said Gary Sullivan, chair of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29.
ISOBMFF was first standardized in 1999 as part of the MPEG-4 systems specification, and is now in its sixth edition as ISO/IEC 14496-12. It is the structural specification under the widely used and supported MP4 and 3GP file formats.
The group that administers ISOBMFF efforts, ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29, was formed in 1991, and works on standardization to support efficient coding of digital representations of images, audio, and moving pictures, among other scopes. Work underway includes the support for volumetric (3D) visual media and support for timed haptic media, such as vibration signals.
The award is MPEG's fourth Technology & Engineering Emmy® Award. Others include MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 together with JPEG in 1996, Advanced Video Coding (AVC) in 2008, and MPEG-2 Transport Stream in 2013). It is the sixth overall Emmy® Award, which includes the Primetime Engineering Emmy® Awards for Advanced Video Coding (AVC) High Profile in 2008 and High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) in 2017, respectively.
