In New ISOfocus Issue, ANSI President and CEO Offers Insights on the Age of Artificial Intelligence

11/25/2019

The November/December issue of the International Organization for Standardization's ISOfocus magazine, which is focused on artificial intelligence (AI), features insights from Joe Bhatia, president and CEO of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), on how the standards community is helping to propel numerous applications of AI technologies.

"From transportation to healthcare, financial services to robotics, manufacturing, and more, artificial intelligence . . . is making a tremendous impact on the way people around the world live and do business. According to research firm IDC, by 2021, spending on AI technologies are projected to grow to $52.2 billion, providing strong economic growth opportunities around the globe," Mr. Bhatia wrote.

"To help unlock the promise of AI and remove barriers to its adoption, globally relevant and globally accepted voluntary consensus standards are key," noted Bhatia. "The standards community has been up to the task, collaborating across industries and national borders to drive innovation."

How does ANSI Support the Growth of AI?

ANSI has served as the secretariat to International Organization for Standardization / International Electrotechnical Commission ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee (JTC) 1, Information Technology, since its inception in 1987, and provided the Chair for the first and only ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee. The U.S. also holds the Secretariat and Chair positions of JTC 1, Subcommittee (SC) 42, a first-of-its-kind standardization committee looking at the full AI ecosystem. The active role of the U.S. in IT work has produced more than 3,000 JTC 1 International Standards to date. ANSI is the U.S. member body to ISO.

"It's a pivotal time to be involved in standards for AI, and ANSI is excited to be at the forefront, working in partnership with other national standards bodies to facilitate globally-relevant standards," Mr. Bhatia wrote. "Our collective work will help to propel the wide-scale adoption of AI and big data systems, enabling next-generation applications in virtually every industry, and changing the future of technology for people around the world."
