Application of ISO 9001 in Policing Organizations: ANSI Seeks Comments on Proposed New ISO Standard

6/18/2021

Submit Input by July 30

As the U.S. member body to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) seeks comments on a proposal for a new ISO standard on quality management systems — guidelines for the application of ISO 9001 in policing organizations, submitted by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), the ISO member for Canada. ANSI seeks input by July 30, 2021.

SCC issued the proposal with the following scope statement:

This document provides guidelines for policing organizations on understanding and implementing a quality management system that meets the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 to ensure the achievement of society's confidence in the police entity, and support police entities to demonstrate their ability to consistently satisfy the needs of their customers (citizens). This document covers all types of policing business and police services such as traffic, maintain order, etc.

Furthermore, according to the work item proposal, "The proposed document aims to provide positive guidance for policing organizations in quality management, customer satisfaction and continual improvement with stakeholders including citizens, governments, small and medium enterprises, marginalized communities, academia and non-governmental organizations (NGOs)."

Review the proposal for additional information and submit comments to Steven Cornish, ANSI senior of international policy and strategy, at scornish@ansi.org, by close of business on July 30, 2021. Based on input received from U.S. stakeholders, a recommended ANSI position and any comments will be developed and presented at the ANSI ISO Committee (AIC) for approval before ISO's voting deadline of September 7, 2021.

ANSI has published an explanatory information document outlining the process used to develop U.S. positions in issues and activities under consideration by ISO and IEC.
